I hope that your new school year has gotten off to a FANTASTIC start!

We have a lot of exciting things to look forward to this program year.
One of the highlights of our youth ministry program is our summer mission trip. And although Summer 2018 is just ending, it’s already time to start thinking about Summer 2019😊.

Our mission trip next year will be July 21-26, 2019 and we will be going with YouthWorks to Milwaukee!!!!  This trip will be open to those students who have completed 6th grade in spring 2019 through seniors who have graduated in the spring of 2019.

Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and the fifth-largest city in the Midwestern United States.  Milwaukee also has the third-highest poverty rate among the 50 largest cities in the United States.  In 1970, Milwaukee was a thriving, industrial city with a relatively low poverty rate of 11%. But decades of industrial decline and population loss took their toll. By 2014, nearly one in three city residents lived below the poverty level. Even though Milwaukee's poverty rate was down slightly in 2015 to 26.8%, there are still 39.2% of children under age 18 living in poverty.

YouthWorks has partnered with this community since 1999. When we join them for a week next summer, we will have the opportunity to serve alongside some great organizations that are working to support the Milwaukee community. These organizations include summer programs for kids, soup kitchens, local gardens, and intergenerational care centers.

In the evenings we’ll have the opportunity to participate in a church service, prepare and serve a community meal, go to the beach of Lake Michigan, and hear from a community friend who works with teenagers and adults that grew up in the inner city.

The cost of the trip is $324 per youth.  That will cover your 14 meals, project materials, evening activities and lodging.  If you are interested in learning more and potentially registering for the trip, please join us for a 2019 Mission Trip Information Session, on September 23rd following worship (~12:30) in the Resource Room.  Or contact me – Gloria.cox@pilgrimoakpark.org.
