Christianity’s dominance in Western thought often frames the rapid spread of Islam across the Near East and Africa as somewhat tragic. These realms had been the birthplace of Christian thought. Now churches and synagogues were making way for mosques and minarets. How did that happen? While we investigate Islamic “evangelism,” we also spend time reading the Quran’s treatment of the Virgin Mary—the only woman the Quran mentions by name.
