Esther’s saga reads like an ancient Cinderella story. And its place in Jewish lore—celebrated with Purim’s costume parties and revelry—adds to this luster. But there is a powerful idea at the core of her story. Esther’s ability to save her people from genocide pivots on her genius for negotiating the hazards of identity politics.
