Bread and indebtedness—neither feels “important” enough to be top of mind in a capitalist culture where bread is easily got and credit is a way of life. Yet both subjects held tremendous significance for Jesus and his followers.
“Bread” was a politically charged subject and debt forgiveness captured the ethical challenges of Jesus’s day. So when he teaches us to pray for daily bread and forgiveness, we’re learning how justice functions and why we need help to live justly.
